About My Project: Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce. I feel that it is important to expose students to science, technology, engineering, and math starting at a young age. First graders are naturally curious, so making STEM learning fun can light a spark in many of our district’s students. I hope to purchase many hands-on tools for the students in my classroom to work with throughout the day. STEM learning centers outfitted with these tools can help first graders develop important skills such as reasoning, teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, and more. These tools focus on real-world problem solving and prepare our future workforce talent for life beyond school. It integrates our math and science curriculum content and helps them to see how to apply it to real-world situations.

Much of the emphasis in the first grade curriculum focuses on reading, writing, and building a solid language arts foundation. I want to expand beyond developing their reading and writing skills, and fill those with an interest in STEM activities with excitement for science and math.

I will buy many STEM active learning sets and building tools with this grant. Our children will love to experiment with bridge builders, problem solving games, gears, roller coaster sets, critical thinking challenges, puzzles, and more. I am confident that this type of hands-on fun can help to create a love of learning science, technology, engineering, and math skills!
