‘Rachel’s Challenge’ community event part of daylong program
Come hear an inspiring true story about one girl’s dream to change the world.
On Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m., the public is invited to a presentation at Lincoln Middle School/SOTA II/Coulee Montessori.
This free gathering will focus on the life and writings of 17 year-old Rachel Scott, a young woman who was the first student killed at the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Rachel’s philosophy was to start a “chain-reaction” of kindness and compassion in her school and community. In her diary she wrote: “. . . people will never know how far a little kindness can go.”
The recommended audience for the program is 7th grade and up.
While making necessary reference to the tragic school shootings, the theme of this presentation is the essence of “Rachel’s Challenge” – to encourage everyone to act toward others with respect and kindness, to realize the power of creating a chain-reaction that increasingly replaces meanness, violence, and bullying in our society.
The presentation is supported by a generous grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation. The evening event caps off a daylong program at Lincoln, starting with an all-school assembly. That will be followed by a special training program for 100 students representing all three La Crosse public middle schools.
Refreshments for the evening event are being provided by Gundersen Health System.
