Bowtie Classic draws record number of golfers, raises record amount

A record number of golfers helped turn the sixth Charlie Miller Bowtie Classic Golf Outing and Knowledge Open into a record fundraiser for the La Crosse Public Education Foundation. More than $31,000 was raised after expenses as 112 golfers teed off on Saturday, Sept. 1 despite a start that was delayed two hours by early morning rain.

Christopher Donahue sported a bow tie once worn by Dr. Charles Miller III, a co-founder of the La Crosse Public Education Foundation. The Bowtie Classic is named in Dr. Miller’s honor.

After the rain cleared, we had a great day for golf and a spirited competition as teams played to share $1,000 in prize money awarded as grants to La Crosse public schools. First place went to a team playing for Lincoln Middle School, which won $500. Teams playing for North Woods International Elementary won second and third places, collecting $375 for North Woods. A team for Southern Bluffs Elementary took last place, winning $125.

This year’s presenting sponsor was Dalco, a leading provider of cleaning supplies for the School District of La Crosse. Other major sponsors include Festival Foods, Marine Credit Union, Coulee Region Mechanical, Waste Management, LHI and the Weber Family Foundation, Complete Control, Coulee Bank, DeBoer Pest Control, GO Riteway, HSR Associates, Mathy Construction, Lifetouch, the La Crosse Tribune and Toyota of La Crosse, as well as the family of the late Dr. Charles Miller III. Proceeds from the event support the La Crosse Public Education Foundation and our classroom grants, Random Acts of Kindness and other programs.
