Milwaukee County Judge Kristy Yang - the first female Hmong-American elected as a judge in the U.S. -- spoke Feb. 7 to students at Lincoln Middle School. She told students her story of overcoming adversity, born in a refugee camp in Thailand and arriving in the United States knowing only two words in English -- "Pepsi, please." Judge Yang told students: “If we remain focused, if we stay committed to ourselves … there is a way out of our situation, a way to overcome our challenges.” She encouraged them to pursue community service opportunities as it helps them learn how to be compassionate. “You know what, you think you’ve got it tough — someone else has it tougher.” Judge Yang's visit was underwritten by a grant from LPEF and sponsored by Wells Fargo. ...
